Sometimes in 2019; I had to I wake up by 4:30am to get myself registered for National ID Card in a NIMC center in my local government – it was that tedious! Aside from the stress of waking up early to locate the center; there are lots of huddles in getting this done; like network failure, power failure, shortage of staff and many more.

Even after the whole process; I had to wait another 8 months or so to collect my laminated NIMC slip. Up till now; I have not gotten my plastic ID card. It’s unfortunate we have to go through this all the time when it has to do with national properties. Anyway, that is not why I am here today.

What Exactly Is NIN?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is the unique number which identifies you as a Nigerian and is issued to you at the completion of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB) by NIMC. Once a NIN is assigned to an individual, it can never be reassigned, given or used by another person – that makes it unique in nature. All citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enroll for their NINs.

What is NIMC?

National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is the legal body established by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007 with the mandate to establish, own, operate, maintain and manage the National Identity Database in Nigeria, register persons covered by the Act, assign a Unique National Identification Number (NIN) and issue General Multi-Purpose Cards (GMPC) to those who are citizens of Nigeria as well as others legally residing within the country.
