How To Produce Correct Cold Water Starch

A starch is found in many plants, and is the form in which food is stored for future use, just as animals store fat for use in leaner times. When manufacturing starch the source plants are treated to remove all other materials such as husks, proteins and other impurities which would hamper performance in the laundry environment.

What Is A Cold Water Starch?

A cold water starch is a modified starch used to stiffen textile and other related fabric. It is simply used in cold (room temperature) water or directly on the material to be treated. There are basically two types: the powder cold starch and the liquid cold starch.

  • The Powder Cold Starch: This is a cold starch in a powder form that needs to be dissolved in ordinary water before use. It looks like powder detergent.
  • The Liquid Cold Starch: This is a cold starch in liquid form that needs to be mix with ordinary water before use.

The Purpose Of Starch In Laundering

  • The stiffness imparted to fabrics to enhance appearance, texture, and performance in use. All fabrics, natural or man-made have a tendency to crease, pucker or flop even after high-pressure ironing.
  • Starch makes a tablecloth lie perfectly smooth on a table with razor edges at the sides, napkins can be crafted into fans and chef hats can sit proudly and professionally on the wearer’s head.
  • Starch also gives thin linen more body and a high-quality feel.

What Gives Starch Stiffening Qualities?

When the starch powder is added to water in the final rinse of a wash process, the grains of starch penetrate the fibres and swell up. When the particles bearing the starch are later subjected to high temperatures and pressure on a press, the retained water in the fabric turns to steam and the grains of starch burst, releasing a sticky substance called gluten which stiffens and binds the fibres as the item dries and cools.

Correct temperature and pressure are very important to achieving a good starch result as any unburst grains of starch will not give any stiffening effect. The roller pressure is also important to successful ironing of all work, not just starch work.

What Makes A Good Cold Water Starch?

  • The product should stiffen cotton fabric well compare with accepted brands in its market.
  • The odour must be well controlled. Use good fragrance.
  • This is especially for the liquid type. However, if the powder type is not well dried, it can also decay. Use good preservative (formalin) to avoid bad odour in the liquid types.

Packaging Cold Water Starch:

Cold water starch can be packaged in sachet, bottles and spray cans, depending on the type. Cartons are also needed for bulk packaging. Sizes of packs should depend on the market demand. However, 20g, 25g, 30g, 50g sachets are in the markets, while 0.5 litres, 1 litre and 4 litres packs for the liquid type can also be found. The aerosol type includes 250mls, 450mls, 500mls etc. The packs are well labeled with the appropriate information like maker, quantity, registration etc.
